A fun commercial dance shoot!
I recently did a shoot for Stage Door Dance and Streetwear located in New Regent Street, Christchurch. The owners Gemma and Colette have the cutest wee shop in a very old and historic building. New Regent Street was built in the 1930s in a Spanish Mission Style and continues to impress me because there are very few old buildings left in Christchurch. I love the shop fronts which are painted in pastel blue, green and yellow and have ornate style. I think they are incredibly beautiful.
Beautiful leotards
The owners, Gemma and Colette, sell everything from beautiful and stylish Capezio leotards to funky Dr Martens boots in bright colours. The upstairs room is packed with racks of leotards and is impressive. They have two cute dressing rooms and seats for those waiting. I just loved the view through the French doors which looks over New Regent Street and I could see the beautiful colours of the buildings on the same level. I also loved their stairway which has a wall covered with posters from musicals and productions.
Delights downstairs
I did some photos downstairs where shoes are displayed under Hollywood lights. I think they are same gorgeous lights one would find in a theatre, possibly in the changing room out the back. Hence the name Stage Door!
Around the corner from the Theatre Royal.
Gemma and Colette’s shop is just around the corner from the Theatre Royal. The Theatre Royal is a beautiful theatre which was repaired and brought back to life after the earthquakes. It is in the perfect spot for dancers who are performing in the theatre to pop around the corner and buy an new leotard or pair of ballet shoes.
My beautiful model
My model for this shoot was the fabulous Charlise. She is well known in the Christchurch dance scene. Her ballet and ballroom and Latin American dancing skills are pretty amazing. Charlise wore a red tutu for some of the photos. This tutu had been stored under the bed at home. Charlise also modelled several Capezio leotards. The shoot started at 3pm and finished when it was dark because we needed a large variety of images from the shoot.
Lucky to get the key!
We were very lucky to get the key to the building across the road. I found out that one of the owners had a brother who was leasing the property across New Regent Street. This property had the opposing balcony. I got up on that balcony and Charlise posed on the balcony belonging to Stage Door. That way I was on the same level as my model and could capture several different images whilst including the amazing shop. This shop really is about it’s location and top quality products and I wanted to showcase this!
A panorama
I took about 8 photos which I stitched together in a vertical panorama. The street frontage and the top of the building where captured. Charlise was posing in the middle of the photo. I even captured birds in flight in the sky above the shop. I hit the shutter with perfect timing. This impressive photo shows the whole building.
