{"id":3220,"date":"2019-08-28T11:31:08","date_gmt":"2019-08-27T23:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.belindalansleyphotography.co.nz\/?p=3220"},"modified":"2019-08-28T11:31:08","modified_gmt":"2019-08-27T23:31:08","slug":"interconnected-the-first-exhibition-of-the-christchurch-womens-photography-collective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/belindalansleyphotography.co.nz\/2019\/08\/28\/interconnected-the-first-exhibition-of-the-christchurch-womens-photography-collective\/","title":{"rendered":"(inter)connected &#8211; the first exhibition of the Christchurch Women&#8217;s Photography Collective"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Christchurch Photography Exhibition 26 August to 31 August 2019<\/h4>\n<h5>A chance meeting!<\/h5>\n<p>Last year I did my first exhibition at the Art&#8217;s Centre of Christchurch. \u00a0It was a huge experience for me and very enjoyable. \u00a0While there a lady walked in named Heather and we started chatting. \u00a0Heather Milne was her name. \u00a0We thought we knew each other but we couldn&#8217;t place where we knew each other from. \u00a0We talked about art and other things for about half an hour. \u00a0She has a webpage called <a href=\"https:\/\/heatherjoymilne.weebly.com\">Heather Joy Photographs. \u00a0Check her out!<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3252\" style=\"width: 950px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3252\" class=\"wp-image-3252 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.belindalansleyphotography.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/69433057_10162117782620117_6552919753415983104_n.jpg?resize=940%2C627\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"627\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3252\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heather Milne, the driving force behind the Christchurch Women&#8217;s Photography Collective, and an old colleague of mine. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jannethgil.com\">(photo courtesy of Janneth Gil)<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Figured it out!<\/h5>\n<p>I went home and friended Heather on Facebook. \u00a0As I was looking through a few old photos of her, determined to find out where we had met each other, I saw a post where she mentioned the aquarium. \u00a0OH! \u00a0We had both worked in the Southern Encounter Aquarium which used to be in the Square in Christchurch. \u00a0I had only worked there about 6 weeks or something very short. \u00a0I was miserable there due to management putting me on ticket sales all day when I was meant to be a tour guide. \u00a0Heather stayed there longer than me. \u00a0There was a lovely bunch of people working there, but I just couldn&#8217;t stay. \u00a0That was 22 years ago! \u00a0Wow, what a long time ago!<\/p>\n<h5>The Christchurch Women&#8217;s Photography Collective<\/h5>\n<p>So Heather and I kept in touch and Heather was talking about starting a women&#8217;s photography collective where we shared our work, no one was critical and it was a supportive environment. \u00a0She had had some bad experiences with male photographers in the past. \u00a0I had to say my experience was the opposite to her&#8217;s &#8211; where the male photographers around me had helped me immensely and been supportive. \u00a0Heather had not found this. \u00a0We met up at the Dux Dine on Riccarton Road one lovely evening and planned what was going to happen.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3254\" style=\"width: 950px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3254\" class=\"wp-image-3254 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.belindalansleyphotography.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/69631103_10162117781690117_3342832317025484800_n.jpg?resize=940%2C627\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"627\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Christchurch Women&#8217;s Photography Collective <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jannethgil.com\">(photo courtesy of Janneth Gil)<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Being Slack!<\/h5>\n<p>I often say that I&#8217;m slack. \u00a0Well I&#8217;m not really slack, I just have a lot on my plate. \u00a0Heather continued on with her idea and started arranging meetings and gathering members for the collective. \u00a0I was looking after children for a month with no husband (he was in Europe on a work trip) and couldn&#8217;t make it to two meetings which planned our exhibition in August. I felt a bit out of the loop.<\/p>\n<h5>Another meeting missed.<\/h5>\n<p>I missed the final meeting just before the exhibition as well as I had children dancing and couldn&#8217;t make it in time. \u00a0By this time I felt like a right plonker. \u00a0The theme of the exhibition is connection. \u00a0We are all connected as women. \u00a0We are all connected as photographers. \u00a0Even though our work is different there is a connection there.<\/p>\n<h5>The exhibition setup.<\/h5>\n<p>We set up our exhibition on a Sunday afternoon. \u00a0As usual I was pretty busy, but made the time to hang my work at 2pm. \u00a0I met some of the members, finally. \u00a0I was trying to remember names and what they did. \u00a0It was a challenge for me.<\/p>\n<p>After a bit of discussion I was given a wall where I could velcro my images to. \u00a0Maia my daughter helped me arrange them. \u00a0They were all images I had entered in the Iris awards over the past two years. \u00a0Mainly double exposures, but also two reflections.
